Adding a background color to entire site

  • connect4consulting

I am now using the Layout Element to force a full width layout on all pages of the website. How do I add a background color to the entire site. Before I used the Layout Element, I was adding the background color on each page of the site, which was ridiculously cumbersome (thank you for the Layout Element), but how do I do this now?

In private content, look at the two pages. Both have the gray background but the newer page (Join/Renew) has a white gap that runs full width at the bottom. The older pages where I built it all out manually, don’t have this gap. To be clear, I don’t want the white gap.

    Thanks so much!

  • Hi there,

You can set the body and content background color to var(–base-2) at customizer > colors.

That won’t work because I have sections of content on the site that I want to be another color – like on a home page with multiple sections.

  • Yes, you can set the background colors for those sections at the block level.

OK cool. Once again you are so helpful! I really appreciate it.

  • No Problem 🙂

  • Ying, I came across this post. I’m having trouble taking a background image and applying across all pages, edge-to-edge. I’ve tried using CSS unsuccessfully. And I tried the element features, again, unsuccessfully. Is there a CSS code snippet you can provide me, or a reference to how I can do this?

  • Hi adpinc61,

Do you mean you want to use a background image for the body of the site?

If so, you can enable the backgrounds module at appearance > generatepress, and go to cusotmizer > backgrounds to add the image as the body background.

Let me know if I miss anything 🙂

  • Thanks! I discovered “backgrounds” was not enabled. Once I enabled it, I found it.

  • Quuestion – I added in “body” but it didn’t work. I had to add to “content”. Does that make sense?

  • It means your “content” has some background color so it covers the body background image.

You can check at customizer > colors > content.

If background color is not set for content, then maybe the background color is from blocks.
