Content Template not displaying when adding new post

  • I’m wanting to create new posts that use a different layout than the WordPress default. I want create a new post and be able to edit the post using the new layout.

I created a content template and set the location to a post category.

When I add a new post I’m not seeing the content template layout for the new post.

If I publish a post in the category it loads the template but how do I add content to the post? Why does the template not load in the editor so that I can create a new post using the template?

  • Hi there,

Templates live behind the scenes. They don’t show in the editor. They provide the framework that gets displayed on the front end and should be built with:

    1. a GP Dynamic Content Block or the core Post Content Block inside them.
This provides the placeholder for your post content.
Without it, nothing you add to the post editor will be displayed.

    2. dynamic content such as Post Title, Featured Image etc.
can be added using the GenerateBlocks blocks and its dynamic content.

    3. Static content and styling, where applicable add other static content and styles.

Share some images or links to sites you want to match if you need any further assistance.

  • How would I create a new post layout that I can edit in the editor?

  • Simple option:

    1. create a dummy post with the layout you want, save it as a draft.
    2. use the Duplicate Post plugin to make a new draft of that when you want to create a new post.

There are other methods, but thats as straight forward as it gets.

BUT…. unlike a template, there will be no relation between that layout and your other posts. So editing one posts layout won’t affect the others.

Will this layout be for all posts ? And if so do you have an example of what you want to achieve?

  • Yes. I’ve created the layout using a page. Here is an example. https://activedirectorypro.com/test2-2/

The sidebar will be different for each post (I used a two column grid to create the sidebar).

  • Will that sidebar contain anchor links just on that page ?

  • No, they will link to other pages/posts. I planned to manually create the links.

  • OK, in that case the simple option above is probably the way to go.

  • Not sure what you mean.

If I create a post it would not look like the page format. This is what a blog post format looks like currently.
    https://activedirectorypro.com/mfa-status-powershell/

That is why I was trying to create a separate blog post format (that looks like the page example).

  • This Page:

    https://activedirectorypro.com/test2-2/

Use the Duplicate Post plugin to create a new draft of it for each page you need to create that looks like that.

  • Won’t the page take on the format of the blog post? I’m wanting blog posts not pages.

  • So, in WordPress virtually everything is a Post.
They just come in various post types such as a Post or a Page or a Attachment,.

That plugin although its called Duplicate Post will dupe any Post Type including a Page.

  • That plugin does not do what I need.

I need a custom blog post template, not for all blog posts but for posts in a specific category. I need the ability to use the editor and load a specific blog post layout. How can this be done?

  • That plugin does not do what I need.

I read the entire topic and I think that plugin is exactly what you need.

Once you’ve created a post with your desired layout, you can use that plugin to duplicate the post, it will be exactly the same as your original post, then you just need to swap the text and images.

  • If I go to post -> new, I cannot create the format I want.

    I can if I create a page but I don’t want a page I want a post.

    What am I missing?

  • If I go to post -> new, I cannot create the format I want.

Have you installed and activated the Duplicate posts plugin?
