I would like all captions (new and existing) to be italicized and have tighter line spacing. I tried creating a global style for figcaption but I can’t. (It creates it as .figcaption and I get an error trying to edit the name.)
Do I need to create a global style and then add it to every caption?

Were your captions added via GB’s image block? Or do you have WP’s image block as well?
Can I see an example caption on your site?

I use the GB image block.

Try using CSS instead of creating global styles; you can use this CSS selector
