I just realized, that for example “calc(50% – 50px)” as the container width works for me. Before widely using that, I want to know if this is a fluke or working by design?

by design … we kept it quiet for now as we still have some inspector controls to update to support the new unit fields.
As a note there are quite a few other string properties you can use today eg.
auto,initial,unset,min-content,max-content -
