Generate Blocks – Magazine Hero & Dynamic Data

  • Hi there,

I’m a GB Pro user and want to make use of the Magazine Hero template (see: https://generateblocks.com/library/?pattern-type=pro&pattern-page=2&pattern-preview=4061).

Full disclosure: I am able to use Query Loops and Dynamic Data for straightforward tasks, and feel maybe with the Magazine Hero template I’m missing something or it’s beyond my current skills!

Example: When I place this template and preview it, it’s showing me latest posts. I would like to adapt this to pull from a specific category (left 2 items), a specific post (central hero block) and a different category (text links in the right hand block). I can see that dynamic data is applied at the image, list of terms and post title levels (associated with headline blocks). But I’m not seeing how I can change the source (if it’s even possible) to specify that the latest posts from a category archive be used to populate the left hand block. What I can see is that I can specify a post to be used here, although if I set the first item to be a specific block, it duplicates into the second block automatically.

I appreciate it’s possible I’m trying to use a template to do something it’s not designed for – which is fine! But I’d appreciate your advice on whether I can adapt this template for the purpose I would like.

    Thanks,
    Patrick

  • Hi there,

so that pattern is 3 x Query Loops built inside a 3 column grid.
Select any of the Query loop blocks, and edit its Block Setting -> Parameters.

Let me know if that helps.

  • Thank you, David,
Even when setting an additional parameter (Taxonomies > categories > specify category), I’m getting an issue with only the first container showing a category archive post, and the second one returning empty (although there are additional posts within the archive). I’ll do something manual as a workaround as I need to post the page and do further testing to see if I can get the template to function as hoped.

Thanks again for your kind help.

    Patrick
