Get new GP menu and logo look and feel on old website

  • I like the newer lighter weight look and feel of menus, with logo at top left rather than banners as in older GP template.
    Example of new look: https://objectinnovations.net/bob/
    Example of old look: https://objectinnovations.net/

My question is how can I achieve the new look with the old website.

  • Hi there,

    1. Switch the logo to the new one at customizer > site identity

    2. Change the navigation location tofloat right at customizer> layout > primary navigation.

let me know if this works 🙂

  • No, it did not work at all!! I did not want to experiment with objectinnovations.net, as that is production business site. So instead I tried a different logo on an experimental site
    https://www.mofsa.org/projects/
As you can see, it’s not the new look I want at all!
What I am trying to achieve is the look on this site, which is practically out of the box with the new GP template
    https://objectinnovations.net/bob/

I am putting in private login information below

The final site I am wanting to get new logo and menu look is mofsa.org

  • Hi Roberg,

    What Ying suggested should work.

I tried logging in to the mofsa site to check what’s causing it not to work but the credentials are not working. Can you check? To be sure, can you also share the login link?

  • First, et me try again to explain the issue. I really like the new GP look and feel that came out two or three years ago, and all the new websites I’ve created since use that, A small example of new look. I did no customization other than provide logo:
    https://objectinnovations.net/bob/
As you can see, logo is on the left, then comes site title and tagline and then, on the same level the menu. Everything was default.
Now examine the old legacy site, after applying Ying’s suggestion:
    https://www.mofsa.org/projects/
The menu does indeed float right, but it is a black baackground and font is different. Also the legacy fontsize is much larger for the site title and tagline.
I want everything to look like it does out of the box with the new template. I believe GP theme is up-to-date.
In the private area I will share the login link. The credentials I supplied are correct, but I omitted the / in the url of the mofsa.org/projects site

  • I see. You don’t have GP Premium installed on the mofsa site. Can you install it first?

Let us know how it goes.

  • Go to appearance > elements, you need to activate the GP modules.

Check your new site to see which modules are activated, do the same for your old site.

  • I did not have GP Premium installed on the site created with the recent GP template
    https://objectinnovations.net/bob/
This site has out of the box the look I want with no customization

The old site I am trying to modernize to the new look is
    https://www.mofsa.org/projects/
On that site I performed the steps you originally suggested. But the menu has the old black background and not the new look I want.
As instructed today I installed GP Premium on that site. Now I have gone ahead and activated all the modules.

I thought this would be a simple, common question. A few years ago you introduced the new look. At first I was surprised and asked how to get the old look back. The answer was some simple customization. Now I have come to appreciate the new look, and I want it for my old sites (I have quite a few of them using GP)!

  • But the menu has the old black background and not the new look I want.

You can change the menu item colors and background colors at customizer > colors > primary navigation.

And you can change the site title font-size at customizer > typography > header > site title.

Please be noted, your theme settings are pretty old, for example, you are still using Floats instead of Flexbox, can you go to Customizer > general > Structure, and change it to flexbox?

  • Is there an easier way I can change my theme settings to be up to date? I can change Floats to Flexbox, but I have no idea what else to change so that I will be up to date.

  • There’s no one click and update all options, but they are all in cuatomzier > general, so it should be easy
    enough to update.

    1. Icon type is still in Fonts, you can change it at customizer > general, and change it to SVG, this will help a lot in terms of performance.

    2. You are still using the legacy typography system, you can change it at Customizer > general, and tick the Use dynamic typography system box.

  • Thanks, Ying!! I have made those changes and it looks much better. I have quite a few old GP sites, so it’s too bad that there isn’t a one-click option.

But you are right that it shouldn’t be too bad to make the changes individually. As an old site is being updated, these visual changes aren’t too big in the scheme of things.

Moral: Stay up-to-date and don’t postpone. Learning experience.

  • Glad to hear that, it’s looking good now 🙂

  • Thanks, Ying. I am marking as resolved.
