Image Sizing

  • I’m just realizing that my images are WAY TOO big and are slowing my site speed. However, I can’t seem to find clear and useful advice online about best practices when it comes to sizing images.

I don’t want the images to be too small, thus not fit in the space dedicated for them, and I don’t want them too big that I’m slowing everything down.

Additionally, I want to avoid WordPress having to scale them and then adding the “-scaled” label on my image file name.

    Do you have any suggestions?

  • Hi there,

Additionally, I want to avoid WordPress having to scale them and then adding the “-scaled” label on my image file name.

WP does not add -scaled label, but the size at the end, like -300x400.

WP creates all sizes of images when it’s uploaded to the media library by default, do you have any custom function or plugin to disable that?

The best image size is the size that the browser renders on the front end.

For example, this image is rendered as 369.95 x 369.95, so the best image size should be 369.95 x 369.95 or 370 x 370, but you are using 1024 x 1024 for now, so it’s not ideal for sure: https://app.screencast.com/kfsHyjbDvIlxn

  • I attached screenshots of what I mean by it adding “-scaled”.

As for the best image size being the size of the rendered image, how do I find the sizing of a rendered image displaying on my live website?

  • Hi there,

WordPress will scale the image if the uploaded image is too big. Some plugins could do this too.

Here’s a sample of how to get the rendered size and recommended size of the image when you inspect it: https://share.zight.com/04uRJjLA

  • Ok, thanks!
