Improving Performance of GB Blocks and GP Premium

  • Hi there,

I used Code Profiler plugin to analyze my site and found GP Blocks and GP Premium to cause the biggest spikes:

With this, I wondered what can be done to improve the performance? I know GP both plugins are super lightweight, but I have theories?

    – I do use php conditions etc. for dispaying up to 20 elements on a page – surely there is a way to cache the responses (or is it not a concern)
    – GP Blocks of mine use a lot of getting ACF and custom fields – can that be cached or improved?

I hope you can shed a light on this, thank you.

  • Hi there,

What you’re seeing with GenerateBlocks and GP Premium showing higher execution times is actually expected and not necessarily an issue.

Both plugins perform a significant amount of processing during page rendering, such as outputting block markup, evaluating display conditions, and retrieving ACF/custom field data. Each meta field retrieval can trigger additional database queries, so pages with many dynamic elements will naturally show increased execution time in profiling tools.

The good news is that this type of workload can be mitigated effectively with caching. The most impactful improvement is enabling object caching if your hosting supports it (many managed WordPress hosts provide Redis or Memcached). This allows frequently accessed field data to be served from memory instead of repeatedly querying the database.

In addition, pairing object caching with full-page caching ensures the heavy processing only occurs when the cache is generated. Subsequent visitors will receive the cached output with minimal overhead.

There are also smaller optimization opportunities, such as reducing repeated ACF lookups, consolidating meta queries, or precomputing certain values so they don’t need to be recalculated on every request.

It would be helpful to know what caching layers you currently have in place and what your actual front-end load times look like. Profilers often reflect worst-case uncached execution, while real-world performance may already be acceptable with caching enabled.

    Let us know!

  • Hello,

Thank you for that – I have object caching and wp rocket with cloudflare APO cdn too.

What else can be done to improve things as this seems too high?

  • Do you notice any significant performance impact on your site, either on the front end when viewing pages or in the block editor while editing posts or pages?

If you can share a real example of the situation, we can take a closer look and determine what might be causing the slowdown and which area needs attention.
