Multisite Global Footer Using GenerateCloud

  • Hi All. We have a 300-site multisite environment built on GeneratePress and GenerateBlocks. Currently each site has it’s own footer but we’d like to build a global footer that all of the sites could use. Would this be possible with GenerateCloud? I was experimenting with a pure HTML/Flexbox footer and pulling it in via the functions file but was wondering if GenerateCloud made more sense. Thanks all! -Mike

  • Hi there,

GeneareteCloud can only sync local patterns.

If you only need the site footer, in my opinion, there’s no point in using GenerateCloud.

It would make more sense to export the Site footer element and import it to your other sites.

You can use the WP built-in export function at tools > export > elements.

  • Thanks Ying. Does exporting/importing the site footer to the other sites break inheritance? I’d like to maintain one footer that is applied to the parent site and the child site.

  • What do you mean by inheritance?

  • Sorry Ying. What I’m after is building a global footer that all of the sites could use. So, whenever I needed to make a change to the footer, I would only need to change it in one file and that change would propagate to all of the site footers. In the past, I have exported a site footer element to child sites but currently, if we have to change any content on the footer, we have to touch all 300 sites.

  • I would only need to change it in one file and that change would propagate to all of the site footers.

It’s not possible, unfortunately. And it doesn’t make sens to me.

Do all your sites have the same info including site name, copyright, etc?

  • Yes, all of the sites should have the same footer. And if I need to make a change to the footer, I want one place where I can make the change and that would affect wherever the footer is included. See in the private window a link to the footer example. Thanks much.

  • Hi there,

In that case, it appears that utilizing a synced pattern is the best approach. However in a multisite environment, I am uncertain if there is currently a method to share synced patterns across different sites within the network.

  • Hi Alvind,

Correct! It’s almost like I would need the ability to create a library (within the GenerateCloud pattern library) of synced patterns where I could place the pattern and only need to manage it in one place.

  • No, it won’t work, unfortunately.

Once you add the pattern via the cloud, the pattern won’t be synced anymore, as WP synced pattern does not support multisites.

The pattern added to the new site will be detached.

  • Ok, that’s what I suspected. Thanks for the help Ying & Alvind. Wouldn’t it be nice to have the synced pattern option on multisites? Maybe some day. Thanks again!

  • Yes, it would be very nice, hope someday WP will make it work 🙂
