Place menu on left side and vertical

  • Hello Support Team !

    Please see UC at:
    https://understand-culture.com

I am making a major change to UC.
It will consist of only a semantic-search
box placed in the middle of the screen.

I want UC’s design look and feel to
resemble the look and feel of ChatGPT
and of Perplexity: chatbox front and
center, navigation left side and vertical.

I have created a staging site:
    https://understand-culture.com/uc-staging-site/

I have deleted all CSS in order to work from
a clean slate. I assume there will be two
containers: one for the chatbox, the other
for the navigation on the left-hand side.

How do I place the navigation on the
    left-hand side and vertical?

Perplexity suggested a handful of CSS,
    but none of it worked.

    Please advise. Thanks!

    John

  • Hi John,

I’m not able to see the staging site as it requires a login.

And have you tried the example 7 method I attached in your previous same topics?

    Let me know 🙂

  • Hi Ying,

I did see Example 7, but was not sure
why you had sent it to me.

I have a clear picture in my mind what
the layout of UC should be. It’s rather
    simple.

On the left-hand side a vertical navigation.
Not too wide. I will adjust it.

The rest of the screen will be for the
    semantic-search conversation.

See ChaptGPT and Perplexity as templates:
    https://chatgpt.com
    https://www.perplexity.ai

I would be happy to give you Admin-access
to UC. You need to send me an email address,
    however.

    Thanks !

    John

Example 7 is a vertical navigation just like what you want, so I’m not sure why you are not following the guide and making it happen…

Once the vertical navigation is done, we can take another look at your site for the content (search) part.

Let me know if I misunderstood anything.

  • I am sure that you have not gotten
anything wrong, Ying. It has most
    definitely been me.

I was hoping that there were just
a few settings in the Customizer
to set up a vertical navigation on
the left side of the site.

I had the impression that I needed
to use Example 7 in its entirety.

Can you, please, resend the link to
    Example 7 again?

    John

  • Hi Ying,

Ok, I found the link to Example 7.
And I tried to follow the instructions.
I did not do too well.

I also noticed that the instructions
were about a Header. Does Header mean
a navigation at the top and horizontal?

Because I could not get the current
navigation on the staging-site to be
    displayed on the left-hand side.

And, I read in the CSS time and again
    “float-right.” Shouldn’t it read “float-left”?

Aren’t there simple instructions about how
to create a menu, place it on the left-hand
side, and then add items to that menu?

    John

  • If your site is using the default GP header/navigation structure, you only need to add the CSS and it will make the site header/navigation go to the left and vertical.

I am not able to see your staging site, so I can’t tell what you’ve done wrong.

Can you provide the login so I can check your setup?

  • Hi Ying,

Happy to give you admin access.
I need an email address, however.

    John

  • You can use any made-up emails 🙂 WP does not check.

  • [credential removed by admin]

  • Hum..the credential doesn’t work. Unknown email address.

  • I’m not surprised.

It seemed strange to me that
the email could be made up.

Don’t you folks have GP-emails that
you can use for these kinds of situations?

    I recall Dave using one.

  • No, WP does not check.

Make sure the user is registered on the staging site, not just the live site.

  • Oh, that was my mistake.
    Give me a second. Sorry.

  • See below, Ying.

  • Hi Ying,

    Please see in Private Information
    your Admin credentials.

    John
