When I disable the navigation search per the instruction, the checkbox to activate the new search modal does NOT appear. Please advise how to get that to work so I can customize the search function. I am using the most current version of GP.

Go to cusotmzier > general, set icon type to SVG instead of font, and structure to flexbox instead of float.

Thank you! That worked and now the search bar is opens up and grey out the rest of the page when it opens. How would I customize it to open to the right of the icon or open a search bar below the main navigation menu?

The built-in search modal offers limited customization options. If you want to achieve the kind of customization you mentioned, you’d need to use a different solution such as a core Search block or a third-party search plugin.
