Should we use separate CSS stylesheets?

  • It is sometimes claimed that separating CSS stylesheets would significantly improve a website’s performance. The idea behind this is that only the most important CSS rules should be loaded first. At first glance, this seems like a great idea, but I doubt that it is really that important. I read an article on Medium that mentioned 450 kB of CSS, which would be absolutely enormous and seems to be a rare exception in terms of size.

Do you have any practical experience with this approach?

  • Hi there,

I’ve seen that idea floating around too. In practice though, splitting CSS usually doesn’t make a huge difference unless you’re dealing with massive files.

For most sites, a well-optimized single stylesheet and proper caching do the job just fine.

  • Thanks Alvind,

    that’s what I thought. I don’t think it’s worth the effort.

  • No problem 🙂
