steps in moving GP from staged site to live

  • I am changing
    https://www.quakervoicewa.org/
which is using the Total theme to the GP Premium theme.

I set up a staged site
    https://quakervoicewa.org/GeneratePress/
with GP Premium and GenerateBlocks and I figured out how to get the staged site to look and work the way I want with GP.

I did that a while ago, and while I made the same changes on both, some of the other folks who work on the site did not.

It will be time to make the GP site live (replacing the Total theme site) in the next few days, and I need advice on how to do that.

What files do I need to save from the staged site to replace on to the live site?
Do I do that before or after I change the theme to GP and then install and activate GP Premium and GenerateBlocks

What else do I need to do and to know? Thank you.

  • Hi there,

To confirm, is the staging site a separate WordPress installation?

If so, the standard process would involve creating a complete backup of the staging site and restoring it on the live site. This process will overwrite all relevant files, database content, and configurations on the live site.

For this task, you can use a reliable migration plugin. Based on my experience, I recommend this plugin for its efficiency and ease of use:
    https://wordpress.org/plugins/all-in-one-wp-migration/

  • Yes, Alvind, it is a separate WordPress installation.

What you suggest makes complete sense except that changes have been made to the live site (by others) that were unfortunately not also made on the staged version.

I may be able to figure out what those are. If I can, I’ll make the changes on the staged site and create the complete backup of the staging site as you suggested and restore it on the live site. Thanks for the recommendation of a good plugin for that.

If I can’t be confident that I have made the changes to the staged pages & posts and do it that way, we will lose the new content. That is what I am trying to avoid.

    Thank you,
    Gabi

  • You can export all content, including posts or any custom post types, using the Export Tool provided by WordPress, accessible via Tools > Export in your WordPress dashboard.

Once you have the exported JSON file, you can import the content on the staging site using the similar Import Tool under Tools > Import.

Once that is done, you can migrate the staging site to the live site using the method I outlined earlier.

  • I’m logged into cPanel Softaculous WordPress and can see the original installation and a new staging I created today because new content has been added by others.

But I don’t see Export (or Import). I see Clone and Staging and Backup and Restore and Remove and Uninstall and Delete.

  • I have a staged site pretty much working and mostly formatted.

And I have another related question. After I deploy the website from the staging one https://quakervoicewa.org/gpstaged/ to the main site https://quakervoicewa.org/ will the links automatically be corrected to the main URL? If not, how do I fix that? Suggestions most appreciated. I’ve never done this on this scale, replacing a whole site.

  • Usually when migrating using a plugin, the URL replacement is handled automatically. However, since you’re using the server’s tool to migrate the site, I’m not sure if they handle that as well. In this case, you may want to reach out to your hosting provider.

  • Thank you, Alvind. I was able to complete it with WP-Staging, and it is working great. There may still be some code left over from the Total theme but I can weed that out as I need to.
With much gratitude for your support,
    Gabi Clayton
