Template Advice

  • Hi,

I am not a web designer. I just want to create a series of simple and functional informational blogs.

Because I do not know website design. I do not know where to start.

My main goals are ease of use and site speed, it doesn’t need to be real fancy because I am not trying to push any emotional buttons, except for trust. I want visitors to feel like they’re being taken care of.

This is just a site to give searchers a in-depth answer to their question. I want them to find what they’re looking for quickly and easily

Sort of like a little wikipedia for each niche, but not quite as boring.

I just need a starting point (template) to get me started so I can get my content out there and see what happens.

If my content sucks, does it really matter how good the site looks? 🙂

I know enough front end and back end stuff to get by, and I am learning GP2 through Jonathan’s course.

Can anyone give me some suggestions for a template that would fit my needs?

I appreciate any and all help/suggestions.

    Thanks a lot.

    Scott

  • Hi Scott,

I’d go with the Craft starter site from the GP Site Library. It’s a clean, minimal blog template that isn’t tied to any specific niche, so it works really well across different blog topics. The layout keeps the focus on your content, which helps reinforce the trust and readability you mentioned.

You can preview it here: https://sites.generatepress.com/craft/

Feel free to ask if anything else comes up!

  • Hi Alvind,

    Thank you for your suggestion.

I am going to try it out.

I have another question about the default GP template.

I have another little project and was wondering if I were to use the default template would I need generate blocks installed to style it?

I am trying to minimize plugin use wherever I can.

I was thinking I would just have GP premium installed and activated.

    Now, that’s minimalist. 🙂

    Thanks again.

    Scott

  • Hi Scott,

Yes, every GeneratePress starter site uses GenerateBlocks to build its layout, so it does need to be activated when using those templates.

By the way, GenerateBlocks is developed with performance as a core focus, so there generally isn’t any concern there if your main worry is site speed or having too many plugins installed. It’s designed to stay lightweight and efficient.

  • Hi Alvind,

    Okay, that makes sense.

    Back to the craft template.

Is there any kind of tutorial for customizing that template, or do I have to just keep messing with it until I get it right?

    Thanks.

    Scott

  • Hello,

Unfortunately, there are no tutorials on how to customize the site but we are here for any help that you might need!

  • OK, Thanks!

  • Ok, no problem!
