What’s so great about blocks??

  • Hi there. As long time user of GP Pro and WordPress I’ve built most of my sites with the excellent Siteorigin Page builder and the content views pro plugin to build wp queries. I’m very comfortable and familiar with these options and can build pretty much anything I or a client wants.

I have tried a couple of times to get into Gutenburg or blocks but quickly get frustrated. For example, this afternoon I downloaded the GP soap shop theme to have a go. So there are 3 icons there.. but it turns out they are svg code which is not available to me unless I subscribe to fontawsome pro? The icons supplied within the generateblocks are very limited.

Next I thought I would add a small panel with an image background and a button. So I added a button OK, but the colours were different from the other buttons in the theme. So I tried to edit my new button with background colours, which looked ok in the editor, but in the published page they were too transparent. I noticed a little red dot which indictates some kind of local styling or something. Googling that suggested I would have to go “pro” with generate blocks to reset that?!

I understand I’m just ranting here. And that I should take time to re-learn the basics of the blocks system, but I just don’t have the time, inclination or $$$ for all these extra subscriptions.

So finally, my question is – What’s so great about blocks??? And what can they do for me that I can’t do already??

    Thanks!
PS – still love GP Pro & elements / hooks 😉

  • Hi,

This is not true, the icons are SVG and you can import any SVG icon you want. There is also a library of some premade ones for you to choose.

    SVG icon library

So I tried to edit my new button with background colours, which looked ok in the editor, but in the published page they were too transparent. I noticed a little red dot which indicates some kind of local styling or something.

Inserting a GB button, indeed has a default color that you can always change. If you have issues with the color, etc, you could get in touch with us so we can help. You don’t need to go Pro to change the local styles! Global styles are a Pro feature, though.

At this point, I am also wondering what is the problem here. If you have a solution that works for you, why don’t you stick with that?

So finally, my question is – What’s so great about blocks??? And what can they do for me that I can’t do already??

Blocks are the more native solution in WordPress. They are lightweight and probably more performant than the SiteOrigin page builder. GenerateBlocks adds more flexible blocks than the core ones being also lightweight and more extendable. For your case though, it might be a good idea to continue with your solution if you don’t have the time to relearn a new tool. Indeed there will be a learning curve involved. If you decide to go with our solution, though, we will be here to help!
