But you see, that’s the thing. This issue happens even when I use the GP Block Element. I’ve added a custom footer multiple times, and it keeps disappearing after I publish, taking other widgets with it. This is the main reason I reached out to GP in the first place.

Do you have a staging site option ?
So we can safely disable plugins etc. and test -

Good morning!
I don’t have a staging site. But, I did disable every plugin and then tried it. It gave me the same results. So I really don’t understand. I may just figure a workaround and not mess with the footer at all. This is just so bizarre.

Just to confirm, if you add a “Block Element” in “Appearance > Elements” and give it the “Site Footer” type, it removes widgets from the widget area? The two areas (Elements and Widgets) are completely separate, so they should be unable to affect each other.

Oh, good grief. I’m so sorry! I’ve been saying this all wrong. When I go into Widgets > Footer Bar OR Appearance > Customize > Layout > Footer, make my custom entry in the Copyright section and Save/Publish, that’s when all my newly created items in any of the widget areas disappear.
The Copyright currently on my website is not the one I want. That’s what I’ve been trying to change.
I don’t see where I can create a new element for the Footer Bar.
If I create new elements for the footer widgets and the sidebar, will this override the existing content in Appearance > Widgets?

Hi there,
Here’s an article on how to set up the Site Footer Element. There’s a video walkthrough at the end of the article for you to follow:
https://docs.generatepress.com/article/block-element-site-footer/If I create new elements for the footer widgets and the sidebar, will this override the existing content in Appearance > Widgets?
Yes, that’s correct. It doesn’t override the existing content you’ve added there—it only replaces the template with the layout defined in the Element.

First, the video must be old because half of what he was showing does not match my screen. And, yes, I’m on the same screen. I couldn’t follow it.
Also, this is not what I want. I don’t want to change the footer elements … I need to change the actual footer bar. If you have read previous posts, you will see that every time I update the footer bar (where the copyright and date are), it removes the content I have added to the footer widgets and the right sidebar widgets.
If you look at my website, I have items in the footer and right sidebar. I’m now scared to make any changes to the footer bar because it wipes out all of my footer items and half of the sidebar.

Okay, if you simply want to change the content of the footer bar to replace the copyright message, there’s an alternative way to do it without using the Customizer. Check out this article:

Hello, I am getting the exact same error message and my website is brand new.
The “generatepress-content-width” plugin has encountered an error and cannot be rendered.
Just installed GP and was in the process of setting everything up. The only things I’ve done are things to build the website. So, something is going on. I need assistance as well.

@ying Thank you for replying. If my website is brand new and I don’t have the classic editor installed, something else is going on. I would like for someone from GeneratePress to assist.

@tom my website is brand new and I’m getting the “generatepress-content-width” plugin error. I am available if someone wants to look at my website.

I have GP Premium. As I’ve mentioned in earlier posts, it doesn’t matter if I change the footer bar in the GP Premium footer area or the Widgets area; once I save it, it disappears, and it ALSO removes my footer and right sidebar widgets.
This is the problem. It’s not that I don’t know how to change the footer bar.
Again, if I change my footer bar (regardless of where I make this change), it deletes both my footer data and the right sidebar data.
I know how to make the changes. It suddenly started deleting everything else. I’ve changed my footer bar many times, but recently, it’s not saving, and it also deletes the widgets.
I hope you understand what I’m saying.

Yes, I understand your issue. Unfortunately, as we’ve explained in previous replies, there’s nothing in GeneratePress’ code or the widget area that would directly cause this kind of behavior. It’s possible the root of the issue lies at the server level, which is outside the scope of our support.
What we can suggest is a workaround—rebuilding the footer content using GP Elements, if that’s what you’re aiming to do.
Also, just to rule out a theme-related issue, have you tried temporarily switching to a default WordPress theme (like Twenty Twenty-Four) and checking if the widget content still gets wiped upon saving? If it does, then the issue likely isn’t related to the theme.

Good morning!
Yes, I tried a standard WordPress theme, and it did the same thing. But …
I added PHP (from the article you shared earlier) using the Code Snippets tool, and it works! I don’t normally edit the php. 🙂
Thank you so much for all your help! And that’s for everyone who helped me here.
I love GP (I’ve been using it since Thomas created it “back in the day”)!
I will mark this as resolved and move on. Again, THANK YOU!
