Accessing Site Library

  • Hello,

I’ve been working on one of the templates that comes with Generate Press.

I wanted to have a look at the other templates available again, but I cannot find the page where I viewed them. I’m pretty sure it was under Appearance<Generate Press<Site Library.

When I press “View Site Library,”a message appears stating:

“Existing Site Import Detected–It is highly recommended that you remove the last site you imported before importing a new one.

This process restores your previous options, widgets and active plugins. It will also remove your imported content and CSS.”

Do I need to press “Remove site?” If so, will I lose the changes I’ve made to the site?

Is this what I need to do to see the other template options again?

How can I see the name of the template I chose? Under “Themes” it just shows the general Generate Press theme, but not the template I applied from the Site Library. Thanks for your help.

  • Hi Midolex,

There’s no option to see what template you have imported. You can view all the site library templates here as well: https://generatepress.com/site-library/

  • But is the reason I can’t see the template library because I have a template activated?

If I remove it it, it says, “It will also remove your imported content and CSS.”

Which imported content does this refer to? Examples, please. Thanks

  • Hi there,

to cover, when you import a Site from our Site Library, it doesn’t change the theme or load any theme templates.
It simply imports a pre-made website.
Much the same as if you every migrate a website to a new domain,
Except the import doesn’t overwrite any existing content.

If you simply want to browser the sites you can do so here:

    https://generatepress.com/site-library/

If you decide to change the site in your dashboard, then this message:

“Existing Site Import Detected–It is highly recommended that you remove the last site you imported before importing a new one.

This process restores your previous options, widgets and active plugins. It will also remove your imported content and CSS.”

Acting on that, and GP will only remove the content it added during the last site import process. It will leave your content undisturbed.

However, if you have added content before or after a site library import, we recommend you take a backup before changing sites, as there are so many server setups there is a chance that something you wanted to keep gets lost.

  • Thank you for your reply. I appreciate your clarification.

You provided a link to view the sites, but what I still don’t understand is this:

I was previously able to view those same sites from within WordPress. I can’t seem to find where to view them within WordPress now. I would like to try out a different site, but am unable to locate where in WordPress I can make this change.

Will I see the sites if I press, “Remove previous site?”

I look forward to your response.

    Thank you.

  • Will I see the sites if I press, “Remove previous site?”

If you remove the old site or Skip that option you will see them, more info here:

  • Ok, thank you very much for your help.

  • You’re welcome !

  • Hi, Dave. Just two more questions, please.

The article you sent says, “It is possible to click the “Skip” link and install another site on top of the site you already imported. However, remember that the backup is taken as you import a site, so if you import on top of another import, you will be taking a backup of the previously imported site. This means you won’t be able to go back to how your site was before the first site import.”

If I choose Skip, will the new site include the plugins (and their settings) of the current site?

Are there any technical problems choosing Skip might cause, or is the only downside, as the article says, that I won’t be able to see how the site was before the first site import?

    Thank you

  • If I choose Skip, will the new site include the plugins (and their settings) of the current site?

    It will:
    1. keep all YOUR existing content
    2. keep the content and plugins from the previous site install.
    3. import all new content and plugins from the new site
    4. overwrite all your current settings with the new sites settings.

Are there any technical problems choosing Skip might cause, or is the only downside, as the article says, that I won’t be able to see how the site was before the first site import?

Yes there are downsides. As the content from multiple sites may conflict:
    For example:
Both sites imported GP Elements that do similar things with completely different designs, now both show up on the site.

I personally would not SKIP the process and have multiple sites imported, it could lead to a some headaches.

As a general note, Sites should only really be imported on a new WP install without content. If thats not the case ie. you have YOUR content you want to keep then the site should be backed up ( by you ) first, or performed on a staging version of the site.
