Blocks activation

  • Hello,

    I have two questions:
    – I’ve just created a website and I’ve installed GeneratePress and one of your libraries (Newsroom) and I can’t access the blocks in the pages and articles even though I’ve installed GenerateBlocks…
I don’t understand what I’ve forgotten/missed because I created a site a few weeks ago using the Relay library (with GenerateBlocks) and I had access to the blocks directly in my pages and articles…

    – I’d like to install GeneratePress with the Newsroom library (and GenerateBlocks Pro) on another old site (with another theme) that doesn’t yet use blocks in the pages and articles. What do you recommend so that the transition between the two themes goes as smoothly as possible?

    Best regards.

  • Hi there,

A certain page, for example, an archive page, was built using an Element module. With that said, you cannot go directly to that particular page and edit it.

If you want to edit those pages, when you are at the current page that you want to edit, just go to the top bar and you will see an ‘Element’ menu. When you hover over it, it will display the current Element that runs on that page. The Element name should be recognizable, and you will be able to click on that element menu to edit it.

  • Hello,

I don’t think I’ve made myself clear enough, because you haven’t answered my question…

I know how to create/modify pages/articles, using blocks and elements is not the question.

On my previous site, I have access to blocks (see image).

In my new site (see image), I don’t have access to the blocks and I don’t know what I’ve forgotten/missed in order to have access to them.

    Kind regards

  • Hi there,

in your Dashboard > Plugins, do you have the Classic Editor or Disable Gutenberg Plugin installed ?

If you have either of those installed then please disable them.

  • Hello,

I hadn’t noticed that classic editor was activated 😔

Now, I’d like to install GeneratePress with the Newsroom library (and GenerateBlocks Pro) on another old site (with another theme) that doesn’t yet use blocks in the pages and articles. What do you recommend so that the transition between the two themes (and mode of use) goes as smoothly as possible?

  • If you deactivate the classic editor plugin, any posts/pages you edit, WordPress will:

    a) open the post with the block editor

    b) wrap any original content inside a classic editor block
This will preserver the classic content and its formatting.
You will be given an option to convert the classic editor content to blocks
You can do this at your leisure when you want to edit them using blocks.

Installing a GP Site form the library
As you have existing content on your site, we recommend you work on a Staging site for the next steps, or at least make a backup of your site.

Install the Newsroom Site form the GeneratePress Site Library:
    https://docs.generatepress.com/article/using-the-site-library/

Making sure to Import the Demo content in the process.

Once that is complete you will need to “fix” any issues on your site, such as swapping logos, menus etc.
Then delete any imported content you do no require.

  • Thank you David for your reply.

I installed Newsroom with all its data on a test site to understand the different settings.

I plan to create a staging site for my old site, which will allow me to make the transition more smoothly.

However, as I’m already discovering Newsroom on a test site, I don’t plan to install all the data on my old site. Would you still advise me to install Newsroom with all its data?

  • The Newsroom site requires a lot of the demo content ( data ) for the various layouts throughout the site.
So you have to install that demo content and delete what you do not need.

  • Hello,

Thank you for your answers. I’m going to follow your advice and install the data.

    Have a nice day.

    Best regards

  • You’re welcome!
