I need to know where to start

  • I bought the theme and premium plugin because it is so highly recommended, but I’m at a loss when it comes to how to start. I have an existing site with a lot of content. I don’t see any walkthrough videos that are very current, and am hoping someone can point me to a resource. All of the documentation I can find is specific to individual modules and pieces. Where can I see someone just…using the theme with existing content?

    Thank you.

  • Hello there,

If you already have existing content on your site, you may start by using one of our site libraries. However, before importing the library, make sure to do a full backup of your site in case any errors occur.

You can refer to this article for detailed instructions on how to get started with the site library:
    https://docs.generatepress.com/article/using-the-site-library/

Let us know if you have further questions!

  • That video shows me how to import to a blank WordPress install. What it (and the article) does not explain definitively is whether I can import a library template without completely overwriting the existing content. Because of that danger I had already discarded the library as an option.

Also unclear is whether an import is page-specific. I see in the library that each template has several pages. When I import, is that overwriting the whole site and adding all of those pages? Or can I import a single page and apply it to a particular page on the existing site?

What I was hoping for is some sort of start-to-finish video on migrating from another theme to GeneratePress. Even if it’s not the theme my site is coming from, being able to see something like that would give me an idea of what to do.

I did not expect finding examples of sites being built in GeneratePress to be so difficult. Much of what I can find on YouTube is years old.

The article/video titles are specific to particular modules and tasks. Because I don’t have any general frame of reference from which understand, I don’t know which module(s) I need. Trying to piece it together is, sorry to say, supremely frustrating. There are videos on how to install a theme and plugin. I don’t really need that…I’ve been working with WordPress for a very long time. I don’t need to align icons or buttons yet. When I get to those points, it’s quite likely I’ll find those videos helpful.

What I need now is to know how to build with GeneratePress and GenerateBlocks. Can you point to a video that shows that?

    Thank you

  • Hi there,

sorry to hear of your frustration.
I’ll try to cover the basics that should help you through:

The GP Theme uses core functions throughout, and provides theme templates for index, single, page, archive, search, 404 and No Results.
Migrating from any other theme that sticks to that WP standard should be ( little ) or no issue
For Themes that register their own custom post or data types, you would need to make separate provision for those post types.

The one custom function in GeneratePress Premium is the Elements module.
It provides User Interface to access the WP Hooks API, and other GP functions. Its primary use is to hook template parts into theme template or even overwrite content and loop templates. Behind the scenes elements are saved as a custom post type, so they are saved in your post tables, which is important to note when importing a Site.

    https://docs.generatepress.com/article/elements-overview/

The Elements module is used extensively in most of the Sites in our Library.

The process of importing site WILL NOT remove or overwrite any existing site data.
However, we recommend that the process of importing a site with existing data is performed on a Staging or development/backup server.

When importing a Site you will need to include ALL Demo Content, as this includes any GP Elements.

    The import process will:

    a) import all demo post content ( Posts, Pages, Attachments ) and Elements.
    b) impart any applicable Plugins the site uses, this will primarily be the GenerateBlocks plugin
    c) customizer settings and plugin settings ( where applicable )
    d) Logos, Menus and ( unlikely) Widgets
    e) WP Settings for the Home Page and blog page ( where applicable )

After import you would need to:
Remove any post content from a) that you do not requore
Replace any Logo , menus etc from d)
Update WP Settings from e) if required

If you require a Child Theme, then you can find instruction and a start theme here:
    https://docs.generatepress.com/article/using-child-theme/

Let us know if you require any more info.

  • I am working on a staging site, thank you. The original site is on a theme based on the Genesis framework. The designer at that time included a plugin to retain the classic editor. I have deactivated that plugin and found that I need to go in and convert all of the content into blocks because everything is all mashed into a single block on each page.

If I import a template, how does it not overwrite existing content? Where do those pages go? To be specific, if I have an existing home (or index) page, how does the import not overwrite what’s there, given that I’m importing an index page? Or does it grab existing content and put it in the new template?

Follow-up to that barrage of questions: should I continue converting over to the blocks on the individual pages before I run the import? It’s a huge site and I’ve thus far gotten through about a third of the pages.

    Thank you

    Amy

No existing content would be removed if you imported a template to an existing site. You will just see the existing pages and new imported pages.

Since you have a staging site set up, the easiest way to determine how much work there is to be done is to actually import a site and try it 🙂

I don’t think it matters that this is done before or after importing the site.

  • Thank you!

  • No problem 🙂
