Upgrade theme with very old wordpress version

  • I want to upgrade the theme but its way out of the date and so is my current wordpress. theme is 2.1.2

I want to know how can I upgrade it smoothly. cant afford to mess up. upgrade wordpress first or theme first? Would it compatiable?

My wordpress is 4.9, php 7.2, mysql 5.7

  • Hi Maizipeng,

Many have changed since those versions, especially with WordPress.

Ideally, nothing should change from our end. What we highly recommend is that you create a staging site and try updating there first.

You can try reaching out to your hosting provider if they can assist you with regards to setting up a staging site.

  • Do you think I should switch to other theme during the upgrade and swap back when its finished?
Should I deactivate all plugins before the upgrade?

Sorry, it has been a while when I tried to upgrade the wordpress.

  • Hi there,

i would follow Fernandos advice and ask the host to create a staging site, there you can then update WP, then the Theme and then the Plugins without affecting the live site. If theres any issues that arise they can then be fixed before pushing the changes to the live site.
