Woocommerce setup and themes

  • I’ve just installed Woocommerce and reached step 1 – Customising your store.

There’s the option of selecting a theme offered or alternatively use a built-in store designer to create a store by choosing a layout, selecting a style and more.

If I click ‘start designing’ a popup asks “Are you sure you want to design a new theme? Your active theme will be changed and you could lose any changes you’ve made to it”.

Not sure what this means whether it’s applicable only to my store area or whole website. How can it cause GP to ‘lose any changes’?

What’s the recommendation here? Should I tailor the store using their specific tools or is GP better.

    Thanks

  • Hi there,

Not sure what this means whether it’s applicable only to my store area or whole website.

It would apply to your whole site as you can only use one theme per WordPress install.

It would best to skip that part if you plan to use GeneratePress as the theme.

  • Does GeneratePress automatically provide a sound layout for my Woocommerce store or am I required to make some changes

  • Hi there,

when you install Woocommerce it takes you through a couple of steps.
Even if you skip the guided install, Woocommerce will create several pages for you eg. Shop, Cart, Checkout and My Account.
These pages Woocommerce will automatically output the necessary content for you.
Note – that the page are assigned in the Woocommerce > Settings Panel.

These will automatically provide you with the default woocommerce layout.

Woo provides additional functions in Customizer > Woocommerce, where things like what to show on the shop page can be selected.

GeneratePress Premium provides a Woocommerce Module, if activated ( in Appearance > GeneratePress ) will aadd a new panel in to the Customizer > LAYOUT > Woocommerce, where you can make changes to shop eg. number of columns and products.
