CTA-buttons don’t always work after just one click.

  • Hi there,

I got some isuess with my CTA-buttons on my homepage.

Often you’ll have to press a CTA-button twice, before it links to the desired page.

Please note that this problem occurs with the orange and light-green CTA buttons on mobile (the green-button will be a direct-call-me button and it’s not set up yet). Sometimes it’ll link with just once click, but more often than not (especially when scrolling back up again) nothing happens with just one click.

Tested on both android an iPhone mobile phones.

Please also note that the exact same problem occurs when de-activating LS cache.

I’ve did some research, and I can’t find an answer myself.

What could be the problem here. Is it GP and/or GB related? Either way, any idea’s what could be the problem here?

    Kind regards.

    Bob

  • Moreover,

I have the exact same problem when all plugins are deactivated, except for GP, GP pro and GB pro.

    Laptop works fine.

Both android and iPhone do not.

  • Did some more tests:

    Safari iPhone: no problems
Google chrome on iPhone: same problems.

tested with every plugin deactivated, except for GP, GP pro and GB blocks.

For obvious reasons I need it to work on all browsers, perfectly.

  • Hi Bob,

I tried the first and the second orange buttons on an iPhone 14 Pro with Google Chrome and they worked. I also tried the light Green button, and this one also worked for me with one click.

I also tested a Samsung A33 and they worked with one click as well.

On what devices did you test with?

  • Hi there Fernando,

    Thanks for your testing.

Hmm, that’s weird. I was showing a friend of mine my website, and he had exact the same problem as me.

He used a samsung galaxy s. I used a iPhone 13 pro. Both with google chrome browser.

I tested again, and I still had the same problem. Especially when scrolling over a cta-button, en then going back up again and clicking on it. It then only works on the second click.

After I tested again, I have now turned on all my plugins again. And it’s worse now on google chro,e, more often than not I have to click a second time, with or without scrolling past by it en then going up and clicking on it. I’m wondering if you do have the same issue now. Cleared all cache on my browser, history et cetera.

Could you please test one more thing, in some sort of variations. (Like scrolling past it, going up again, clicking on it. or clicking on it, until it opens, going back again, scroll, back up again and clicking on it again).

I am trying to pin down the problem, but I don’t know where to start. Especially because I have the same problem when all plugins are deactived (although less often, it now seems) and you seem to have no problems at all.

I’m in the dark here haha.

BTW: it works perfectly fine with safari browser AND firefox on iPhone 13 pro now, even though I activated all my plugins. But it just utterly sucks on google chrome.

    Kind regards.

    Bob

  • Hi there,

somedays it feels like mobile chrome is the new internet explorer, and debugging it is nigh on impossible.

Issues like this can be many. But the two main causes are:

    CSS hover effects
Some script interfering with the tap events.

The latter one is generally related to optimizations. And can be tested by temporarily disabling plugin / server optimizations and clearing the browser caches.

The CSS hover, if you create a CTA button and in the color settings remove ALL hover colors, and if there are any hover effects remove them too.

  • Hi David,

    Thanks alot.

    That makes sense.

I do indeed have hover effects on, to increase clickability.

I’ll do some extended testing. I’ll let you know.

    Bob

  • Let us know

  • Ok, so here’s what I did:

    1. removed ALL hover options and colors.
    – both customizer and editor
    – thus, including all navigation hover effects, footer hoover effecters, all buttons et cetera.
    – deleted all WP forms with hover effects in it
    – cleared LS cache
    – cleared history and cache on google chrome

result: none, still the same issue on google chrome. No problems with safari and firefox (didn’t have any problems to start with).

    2. disabled LS cache plugin:

Result: none, still the same issue on google chrome.

    3. disabled ALL plugins, except for GP, GP Pro and GB pro.

Result: none, still the same issue on google chrome.

    4. created a clean, new blue test cta-button on homepage. No editing, only removed the standard hover options on the button.

Result: none, also this buttons has problems with first click.

So, what could be the cause of the problems with the CTA-buttons on google chrome only?

Here in the Netherlands almost everyone uses google chrome on their mobile (mostly iPhone). So it’s a big thing for me.

What options do I have left? Or do I just need to accept that most of my visitors will have this problem?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Does the issue persist if the page is opened in a Private/Incognito browser?
( this may eliminate any browser extensions, caches or localStorage/Cookies causing an issue ).

  • Hi David,

Yes, it does. I included it in my extensive testing.

No difference between incognito browser and normal browser (with all history deleted).

BTW: when I visit my homepage and DON’T scroll and directly click on the first cta-button, it works instantly. However, when I scroll just a bit, and then click on it, it ONLY works the second click. Problem is that you always scroll on a website lol.

    Bob

  • Site is under maintenance now. Don’t want customers to visit my webpage when they google my name.

Please let me know if I must de-activate the maintenance plugin, so my website is visible for you.

  • Can you disable the Sticky Navigation ? And then test ?

  • On it.

    I’ll let you know.

  • Okay,

    Works perfectly fine now.

Is there a way to enable sticky navigation on mobile, without having this issue?

Because, especially my homepage is long. It might reduce my conversion rate, if potential customers cannot navigate via mobile menu.
