Restore Pattern Library

  • Can you please restore the old version of the Pattern Library?
This new version doesn’t make any sense and is useless. I’m asking if there is any chance you will restore it. It should start looking for the new template and forget about the Generate theme and block altogether.
    I appreciate your response.

  • Hello there,

For the time being, you can copy the old patterns from here:
    https://generateblocks.com/legacy-library/

  • Thank you, it helps. For how long will this old library be available?

  • Hi there,

the current plan is to shut down the legacy patterns server on August 1st this year.

  • Thank you for letting me know. What a pity. For me, it’s a dealbreaker, but I hope it will help your business.

  • Just wondering why was the old pattern library removed? The new pattern library in its current state is like a big downgrade from what the original was. Any thoughts if this is going to improve and at least be as good as the old one if not better?

The button options are gone. Testimonials block looks so boring here. I am not sure how this will justify being a premium Generateblocks product. Unless of course, this is still a work-in-progress.

    Thanks!

  • Any Legacy patterns that you really like:
    1. create a draft page and and the pattern to the page.
    2. select the blocks and convert them to a Pattern, making sure to uncheck the Synced toggle. See here:

    https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/create-a-pattern/

Now you have a personal pattern library that you can export/import to any other site using the Dasboard > Tools > Export options.

    Our decision:

The Legacy Patterns were very good at providing a limited showcase of design “possibilities”. Which we recognise for some users were just right as they were happy to go with that design.

However, As a tool for users wanting to make their own design decisions, these were completely impractical.

The New Patterns addressed this issue by providing a library of commonly used patterns seen in modern web design; they are mid-fidelity , so at a glance don’t look fancy.
But they are built to a common framework.
They will inherit Theme styles without modification and Pro users can take advantage of the Global Styles to further style them; [read more]

So users will be able to add base styling to the entire library for their specific needs, and we will be providing some tutorials on how to do this as part of a wider guide on using patterns.

Moving forward, we will begin building sites that use the same Pattern Framework, to which our design team will add opinion to those sites through Theme and Global Styles. So each site will automatically add style to the pattern library for you. We will also look to see how these “style books” can be imported without the site so users can choose from opinionated versions of the pattern library.

Its just the start of a new and very powerful toolset for building sites, and we know its daunting as this is a big change. But we do respect your opinion and feedback and we are listening. And I do hope you can stick around to see where we are going.

  • Hi David,

Thanks! I am glad we have a way to save the old patterns for use in the future.

I understand that you seek to provide a framework instead of a complete design palette.

The legacy designs are really great at giving a site some cosmetic makeup. Without needing to be a pro designer. However, I am sure you will come up with design ideas that will make GenerateBlocks Pro the true pro it has always been.

    Thanks again.

  • Thank for your feedback! Its much appreciated.

  • The new update is disappointing. We have been working with it for a while and find ourselves constantly going back. Grids don’t help.

Thankfully there will always be Wayback Machine. The decision to go from the old library to this new one was short-sighted and unfortunate. The new blocks library in WordPress is definitely less helpful when it comes to design and also takes FOREVER to load.

This statement – “The Legacy Patterns were very good at providing a limited showcase of design “possibilities”. Which we recognise for some users were just right as they were happy to go with that design.

However, As a tool for users wanting to make their own design decisions, these were completely impractical.”

This is completely untrue – having something that looks closer to reality is always better than a grid or a blank holder…also just do both…let people have the tools that work best for them.

I love GeneratePress and Blocks for a lot of things but this in not one of them.

  • As a long-time pro user of both Generate Blocks and Generate Press, I’m so happy to see a long-awaited update to the pattern library.
As a designer, I have been looking at the old patterns with frustration and have been searching in vain for a good way to transition away from Generate Blocks, but now I don’t have to. The new pattern library is great and a good foundation for an even better pattern library in the future. I love that it’s minimalistic and easy to tweak into a unique design.
Great work on the typography and spacing.
    Keep up the good work!

  • That seems like a canned response from a fake Linus…Hey Linus can you show me a website you are working on that “can’t” use the old library items?

  • The user “Linus” has already copied the same text into this thread. https://generate.support/topic/design-elements-in-new-pattern-library/

Who is trying to take us for a ride here?
