New Global Styles & Pattern Library Problems

  • Hello,

When I opened the GenerateBlocks Pro 1.7 pattern library today, I was shocked.

Before, there were ready-designed elements, often with colored backgrounds and gradients or other gimmicks. Now there are only very plain elements without any design.

There are also no more boxes and content elements. Where are they?

In addition, when you open the pattern library in WordPress, the patterns load extremely slowly or not at all and you only see the spinning circle.

Is that how it should be?

You used to be able to simply copy and paste the patterns from the GenerateBlocks website. That was 100 times faster. Is that no longer possible?

For me, this is an extreme step backwards and the previous free version was much better for me than the current Pro version.

Or is there a malfunction here that explains the situation I have described? I can hardly imagine that this is intentional.

    Or is it?

  • Totally agreed!
I wonder where to find old beautiful patterns.
If old patterns removed, when we have those beautiful templates again on new pattern library?

  • Yeah, i was shocked too and I miss many things

  • Hi there,

    thank you for the feedback.

First off Legacy Patterns are still available in GB Pro for a limited time via the Pattern Library Block in the block inserter:

    https://app.screencast.com/GZXWlTL698Qfz

If there are any that you are particularly fond of we recommend that you save them to your Local Patterns. As they will be removed at a later date.

The decisions behind the changes we have made are many fold, and the plugins have been in Beta testing for almost 2 months prior to their release, and the general feedback of these changes has been well received.

You can read more on the changes here:

    https://generateblocks.com/new-global-styles-pattern-library/

    And here:

    https://docs.generateblocks.com/article/pattern-library/

Overall the new patterns library address many issues users have raised over the last 2 years, in summary: Patterns are over opinionated that had limited scope, were built inconsistently and required more time to unpick a design than it would to build it.

The new patterns provide a consistent design framework that inherit your sites styles ( color and typography ) and can be further styled with global styles. They are just the first stage in this development, and we intend to progress this further with more automation and convenience features that will assist with site designs and styling.

We do appreciate all feedback, if theres any feature requests then please feel free to add them at the link below:

    @Sonja
In regards to any technical issues, if you can share any screenshots of the problem then we can assist with that.

  • Hello David,

I used to be able to copy and paste a pattern from the website. Duration: 2 seconds.

Today this is no longer possible. It takes forever and many patterns don’t load at all. With many I only see the spinning circle without them loading.

And: Why are there no more boxes and content patterns? The simple boxes in particular were a clear added value for me, as you could insert them into any text.

I don’t understand why you have taken such a step backwards in terms of choice and user-friendliness.

  • I totally agree with Sonja

  • I think need a fallback option for old pattern and old GP Pro version a few months.

  • It takes forever and many patterns don’t load at all. With many I only see the spinning circle without them loading.

When viewing the pattern library and you see a spinning circle, can your Right Click > Inspect the screen, this will open the browser developers tools.
Check in the Console tab for any errors. Let me know.

Content templates will be added later, but you can add any template inside your containers eg. Feature Sections.

For the copy and paste option, i will review if that is still possible. Although personally i find the GB Pro Bulk inserter a much faster method

  • Hi David,

I still have the situation, that some patterns not loading. Even on the GenerateBlocks Website they are not loading. I have checked the dev tools, like you said. It shows the error:

    /wp-json/wp/v2/media/4346?context=view&_locale=user:1
Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 ()

    And some warnings:

  • Further info!
The strange thing is on some sites I see the legacy block, and some I dont!
Even on a brand new WP installation I just installed I do not see it!

    Hi All,

I do not see the ‘Pattern Library (Legacy)’ like shown in David’s image above.
    Am I missing something ?
I have looked in two of my sites that have been upgraded to 1.7/1.9
I looked in the Preferences, and it is not shown in the list of block there either!

    TIA, Dave

  • Hi Sonja,

the first error ie. the 404 is an API requirest failure, its trying to find the Image but could not. Which is odd. Could you clear the browser caches and then re-attempt to open the pattern library.

    Hi David,

sorry i should have explained, it will only appear if the site had a legacy pattern installed on them. Can you confirm if the site did have them or not ?

  • Thanks David, I will investigate that!
So how do I give access to a new site to have both the new and old patterns available ?
I can see some of my clients will be confused (not to mention me 🙂 )

    Dave

  • To be brutally honest, on a new site don’t give them both.
It may unfortunately mean converting some legacy patterns to new patterns.
But if needs must ill check with Tom as i think we added a filter to bring them back regardless. Ill let you know.

  • adding my vote to bring back the old patterns. Infact, it would make sense for you guys to actually hire a designer who creates new patterns as styles evolve. This will make GPPro and BlocksPro even more attractive.

Having the patterns made working on GP a breeze and this was, infact, a major decision to pay for pro (over 4 years for me); and, suddenly taking those away is indeed a step back in the work flow of many of your customers.

I certainly understand that you’ve tested/feedbacked this–but i think your sample size or source did not have many ‘laywebsite’ designers; and now not having access to those predesigned patterns is posing a serious issue.

  • @David, we will look to add the filter to activate the legacy patterns.
For now you can just import any single legacy pattern to a new site and it will activate it for you.

  • Thanks David,
I’m not sure how I do that ?
As discussed in another support topic, the Local Patterns that was in the GB menu area now jumps to the Appearance >> Patterns…
    Regards, Dave
