Read More Doesn’t Link

  • The ‘read more’ isn’t linking to the post – it is just the words without any link. I have deactivated every plugin and the problem persists.

    Thank you!

  • Hi there.

can you share a link to your site where i can see the issue ?

Thank you David – can you also tell me how to get my email not to appear by name in the forum? Thanks

  • OK, so you’re using the core Query Loop block to display those posts.
If you edit the query loop block, inside it is a Post Excerpt block. If you delete that , and then re-add the block does the link return.

To change your forum display name:
Click My Profile at the top of the forum, then Edit, in the form provided set a Nickname, and then set the Display to the nickname

  • No, that did not make it return. Here are other pages it isn’t working on (and there are more – it is essentially not working anywhere on the site) I just did an update on GP yesterday, I wonder if there is something in that update that caused it because I don’t recall noticing this before last night and I just updated yesterday, although I could have just missed it before.
    https://mydogguide.com/training-behavior/
    https://mydogguide.com/maintenance-care/

ETA: I have several sites running GP and use the same core query on all of them – I just checked another site I have not updated yet and the Read More Link is working – before I update that site do you want to look at it to compare and see if there was an issue with the update? Here is the site/page example it is working fine (that is not updated with the new GP yet):

    scroll down to healthy living
    https://smartmomhq.com/home-life/

  • Has the other site been updated to WP 6.3 yet ?

As the theme doesn’t interfere with your content, and that query loop is part of your content.

  • mydogguide.com is updated to WP 6.3

ETA: It seems there is some connection to the GP update (or compatibility with the new WP 6.3?) that is making the Read More not work – here is another site that the Read More is working fine – this site is NOT updated with the new GP OR WP 6.3:

    https://itstartedwithablog.com/

This site is updated to WP 6.3 AND the GP update and the Read More is NOT working:

    https://fruitfarmsnearme.com/

This site (which I previously listed for you) is NOT updated to WP 6.3 OR the new GP update (and Read More IS working):

    https://smartmomhq.com/home-life/

  • The Theme is only responsible for the Excerpt and the Read More Link that it displays.
The site you have the issue with is not using the Themes loop, excerpt or read more.
Those are being displayed by the core Query Loop block. And GP does not interfere with that.

And our updates never intentionally interfere with any core functionality, And the most recent updates were minor patches for code deprecations related to WP 6.3 updates. None of which have any relation to Excerpts or Read More.

The issue is more likely to be related to the WP 6.3 update.
Something has not quite updated correctly.

If you can, create a staging site, and disable any child theme or plugins to first see if there is a conflict.

If the issue persists then remove the core query loop block completely, publish those changes and then re-add the query loop.

  • I have tried all of these things and the Read More is still not working – it is not a link. Can you provide other things that might be causing this and more I can try to fix it?
    Thank you

  • Hi Tawna,

The issue is likely with WordPress. GeneratePress has no control over that.

Have you created a Staging site for testing?

  • Fernando and David,

My hosting company worked with me extensively on this issue today and we did the same as setting up a staging site; however, instead we used one of my other sites that was recently set up using duplicator copying mydogguide.com as there is no new content on it that mattered if it was lost.

As I previously mentioned, all my sites are set up the same; I have a master site and use Duplicator to copy it when setting up a new site. We also determined in a prior conversation (with GP, see previous chats) the only sites having this issue were the ones that did an automatic update to WP 6.3 – I have two sites not on the automatic update so they are not running WP 6.3 as of yet, and the Read More in the query is working fine on them.

The site we used for testing was heavenlyprintables.com

When we reverted the site back to WP 6.2 (or whatever version was before 6.3) the Read More worked fine, so that was the start of the testing. Of course, we had pretty much determined this. πŸ™‚

My hosting company determined the issue is a conflict with GP and the WP 6.3 update. I have included their entire message in the private box. They offered to work with ya all to get this fixed. They have outlined the specific issue (see the conversation.)

Thank you for all your help

    Dr. Tawna Schmidt

ETA: I did not include the screen shots of the conversation because I don’t know how to add images in the private information box. Please advise. Thank you

  • My hosting company determined the issue is a conflict with GP and the WP 6.3 update.

As David and Fernando already mentioned, I also can’t see how this would be a GP-related issue. The theme has absolutely no control over the core query loop.

Have you tried disabling all plugins, custom functions AND activating a Twenty series WP theme to see if the issue still occurs?
If so, please show us the read more link is indeed working in a Twenty series WP theme.

    Thanks!

  • Leo,

Yes, I have disabled the plugins. This isn’t the issue. We have determined the issue after many hours of analysis and it is outlined in their analysis report. How can I get you the screen shots of the conversation before you say it isn’t a GP problem. I am not saying it is; however, it doesn’t make sense you would not want to see the conflict and how it is happening, especially when it is outlined in their conversation when the GP read me settings are changed the problem stops.

And yes, they did enable a twenty series theme, plus changed the PHP version, and there were no errors (this is in their analysis I am trying to get to you.)

They want to help me fix this and kindly offered to work with GP to get it done; I can hope the same of GP. I run all of my 15 sites on GP and one of the biggest reasons I chose your platform was because the support team is more important to me than anything else in any program, theme, plugin, etc., and I have never regretted the decision. Ya all have been great over the years.

    Thank you

  • You can upload image to https://postimages.org/ and share the link with us.

However, I tried adding a core query loop block to my site which is using WP 6.3 and GP, and the read more link behaves normally.

I’m not sure how your hosting company determined this is a conflict with GP theme, so I’m curious how we would be helpful in this case as it’s not our product and we have no control over it.

Anyway, have you tried switching to the twenty-twenty theme? Does the issue still occur?

    Let me know πŸ™‚

  • Ying,

Thank you for the information. Sending over now.

I am not a developer nor do I claim to know anything about the ‘guts’ of GP or WP. I just have a lot of sites with a big issue I am trying to get fixed, and unfortunately, I am in the middle with no idea what to do with this problem. This is why I pay for a premium WP theme, plus premium hosting, and typically purchase my plugins over using free so I have good support, because when there is an issue I do not have the knowledge to fix it and I am the first to admit it.

I rely on the experts so please understand I don’t know how this stuff works, what does what in WP and GP, etc. – so I am not trying to make this difficult nor place blame on GP in any, just get it fixed without having developer knowledge. I am an expert in other things, just not this. πŸ™‚

I am at a handicap – I only know what I am being told on both sides between GP and my hosting. I hope it isn’t a GP issue so we can mark one more thing off the list causing it. πŸ™

    Thank you for your assistance

  • GP Team,

Not sure how the image platform works – I downloaded the screen shots. Did you get them or do I need to do something more?

    Thank you!

    Dr. Tawna Schmidt
