Read More Doesn’t Link

  • Hi Tawna,

    Once you’ve uploaded the Images to https://postimages.org/, kindly share the links of the uploaded screenshots here.

    We won’t get those automatically when you upload them, https://postimages.org/ is just an external platform for sharing screenshots but through links.

  • thank you Fernando – I added the link in the private notes

  • GP shouldn’t be duplicating the Read More button. On my end, the WordPress Query Loop Block works perfectly with GP as well.

    Do you have a Staging site for one of your sites encountering this issue where we can do some testing? I’ll try to see if there’s anything apparent causing the issue.

  • Fernando – we didn’t set up a staging site because I have a site that can be used just like a staging site – it is set up like every other site and has content on it but nothing that matters if it is lost. Essentially, anything can be done to this site for testing. I will put the login credentials in the private info.

    I got this a bit ago from my hosting – and the site is currently on WP 6.3 (it works fine when we revert to the prior version) and it will work with 6.3 if you do these 2 things per my host:

    “On WP 6.3, in order for it to work, you should reduce the number of words and deactivate the GP premium plugin.”

    Thank you

    ETA: in other messages, they told me the number of words had to be less than 50 when he got it to work (and GP premium had to be deactivated)

  • This issue is odd. We haven’t had any issues like this before.

    It’s like something went wrong with your Database. I tested a couple of stuff. I even tried replicating your Customizer settings on my test site if I can replicate it, and I still couldn’t.

    I’ve found a solution though but it may mean redoing your Appearance > Customize > Layout > Blog settings. What you need to do to fix the issue is to reset the Blog module: https://share.getcloudapp.com/E0uL0ZGm

    Then, add a Read more text in your Query Loop Blocks: https://share.getcloudapp.com/xQuE1wNX

    Let us know how it goes.

    P.S. I deleted your Child theme while I was testing. If you have a copy of it, you can reinstall it.

  • Thank you, Fernando – I really appreciate your help!

    Whatever went wrong was replicated between GP and WP in the database on every one of my sites so it wasn’t just a one-time fluke, not being on just one site, but odd it is just my sites this were hit so far as we know.

    I have two sites I haven’t updated to WP 6.3 and I don’t know what to do with them (one of them is my largest site with loads of traffic and years of content) – I can leave them on the prior version for now but at some point, they have to be updated and without this problem being fixed, is it going to correct itself in the future or is this inevitable to happen on those sites at whatever time I update (even considering I wait until WP has a newer update than 6.3)? Thoughts?

    Also, the other question is, without the problem being fixed and just using a workaround is it going to correct itself with future updates, cause deeper issues, or just remain as is and the appearance of the workaround not be in the format that looks professional forevermore – but it ‘works’? Thoughts?

    What I mean by the workaround not looking professional:
    I was able to use your workaround and get the read more to work. However, the read more text appears twice -the read more words, plus the link, which doesn’t look good. If I remove the Read More label to get rid of it appearing twice, I lose the three little dots after the excerpt which looks odd, leaving the Read More link just showing up, and I cannot get it on the same line as the excerpt text, it is below. Another odd thing – when the excerpt number hits 56, the 3 little dots reappear (which is nice but that is way too long for an excerpt.)

    So if you can help with the above questions, as I feel like I am at a loss for what to do at this point.

    Is there anything more your team can do to figure out what is causing this? Otherwise, the two options are to revert back to the prior WP version or use the workaround.

    Either option is going to take a lot of time – if I revert back, I lose all the content added since the update, if I leave it as-is I have to re-establish all the blog settings on every site plus go to every page on every site that has a query loop and manually re-add the read more button.

    Thank you again for trouble-shooting this with me.

    No problem on the child theme – I can easily reinstall it.

  • To clarify, did you try “resetting” the Blog Module in Appearance > GeneratePress to remove the “Duplicate” Read more? You’ll have to take a note though of your Settings in Appearance > Customize > Layout > Blog before doing this. Doing this seems to remove the duplicate Read more.

    It’s not actually a workaround. By default, you need to add a “Read more” text manually to the Excerpt Block for it to show the “Read more” text. Your sites somehow automatically show this. And, there’s something affecting the ellipses as well somehow. This is not normal GP Premium behavior. GP Premium shouldn’t be affecting the WordPress Query Loop Block which is why this is baffling.

    Moreover, I also searched for a video of how the excerpt Block should behave on an older version of WordPress, and I can confirm that you really need to add the “Read more” text reiterating the strange behavior on your site even prior to the updates: https://youtu.be/HyFYeOYMgGQ?t=76

    I also tried to replicate the issue on my end with the same settings you have, and I wasn’t able to replicate the issue somehow.

    I’ll tag this as “Discussion” and mention this issue to the team. For clarity, are all your sites hosted on one server? Do you have a website experiencing the same issue hosted on a different Hosting Provider?

  • Yes, I did exactly like you told me on all fronts step by step on another site to try it out, as well as worked in the site you are working on. On the other site, I did the blog reset in GP, then re-added the Read More to the Excerpt, but the only way to remove the duplicate Read More for a low number of word count is to remove the Read More Label completely (leave it blank) and then there are no … to visually show there is more content.

    If you leave the ‘Read More’ words in the Read More Label, the problem arises again when you lower the excerpt word count.

    Please go into the site and slowly tick the excerpt word count up and down and you can see the problem happening.

    My excerpt needs to be less than 30 characters and there is no way to get rid of two Read More’s at this number and keep the …, maybe you can find a way to make it work?

    Let me know. Thank you.

  • Hi there,

    if you go to Customizer > Layout > Blog, and delete the Read More label, does the no linked text disappear?

  • yes but the … also disappears (if I understand your question correctly)

    the best thing is for you to hop into the admin panel on the site you can quickly see the bizarre behavior I have described above – do a quick test and it is very clear when you add or take out the Read More label, plus tick the excerpt word count up and down

  • Ok, i have managed to replicate the issue locally, i just need to figure out the how and why, i have marked this as a bug and ill report back asap.

  • Thank you David, I really appreciate you and your teams help on this

  • Ok, in the meantime if you edit the Query Loop, select the Excerpt Block and in the block settings set the length to match what you have in GP then that should remove the duplicate read more text

  • ok got it – thanks

    I have 3 sites that are not on WP 6.3 yet so I will hold off on updating them and just deal with the sites that have already been updated and have this issue for now.

  • You should be able to add this PHP snippet, which tells GP to NOT output its Read More, just the elipses :

    add_filter('generate_excerpt_more_output', 'custom_read_more');
    function custom_read_more($output) {
    	return ' ... ';
    }
  • ok – I have never added php, only css – where should I add this at
